Bangladesh forest department has banned fishing throughout the year in 400 canals spread across Sundarban for conservation of its biodiversity resources. The canals, 25 ft. or less in width and located within eastern and western parts of Bangladesh Sundarban, will fall under this ban. It is over and above the mandatory ‘no fishing’ diktat in entire Bangladesh Sundarban during July and August. While the fishermen groups have opposed the decision, environmentalists welcomed the move.
